Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
